A fifth birthday does not need five presents. This is a shortlist of five different directions, so you can choose one that fits the child, your budget and their family’s everyday life. Start with what they enjoy, not with what you think they ought to learn.

1. A book you will read together
Choose a story with illustrations the child wants to explore and language that works for shared reading. You do not have to turn each page into a lesson. Ask which picture they want to look at again, or let them tell you what they think happens next. A short note promising a reading afternoon can make the gift personal.

2. Materials for their own ideas
